Mantrailing (person search)

Mantrailing

Mantrailing (man 'man' and trail 'follow') is the search for people using working dogs called mantrailers or sniffer dogs. The dogs' excellent sense of smell is utilised in this process.

The difference between a mantrailer and other search dogs is that the mantrailer is able to distinguish between different human odours during the search and, in spite of the many temptations, is guided exclusively by the odour characteristics of the person being searched for.

Mantrailers can not only be used to track pedestrians, even the relative seclusion of a moving car does not prevent people from leaving traceable tracks. Unlike tracking dogs, mantrailers can also be used in buildings and on built-up areas.
